The Heart of the Matter
By Zack Clark
A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40 (nasb)
In today’s busy world, the straightforward words of Jesus can really help us focus on what is most important. In case you haven’t noticed, life at our Christian school is full of action. There are a lot of things going on all the time. Not only do we have the day to day discipline of academic pursuits, but we have athletic events, academic clubs, social activities, fundraisers…and the list goes on. While activities are important, this reminder from the Gospel of Luke really helps us remember the heart of the matter.
The student will be like his teacher. What a phenomenal promise. There is no other verse that so succinctly provides encouragement and a warning to those of us in education. Research indicates that the only thing children spend more time doing than school activity is sleeping. There is no other place in a child’s life where there is more potential for positive or negative impact than the time they spend at school.
But, this isn’t about sheltering children. This is about recognizing the truth of Jesus’ words and placing educators in front of our children that are called and equipped to prepare children for a life of impact and service for our Lord. Our children are learning all the time, not just when they are listening to a teacher make sense of geometry. Our children are learning how to serve by watching their teachers. They are learning how to communicate appropriately by watching their teachers. They are developing their view of life by listening to others apply God’s truth to their experiences.
Of course, they are also learning that we are all human. No Christian school is perfect because we are an organization made up entirely of people. Our teachers, parents, and students are going to make mistakes. But, we are given a tremendous opportunity in our Christian school to apply God’s grace to these situations, and work to restore relationships and exercise our own capacity for forgiveness and spiritual growth.
So we move forward, knowing that your expectation as a parent is for our school to be more diligent, more serious, more prayerful, and more deliberate about the teachers we hire and retain than any other school. Your child is here, and the teachers must be up to the task of “fully training” students for a life lived for Jesus Christ. While people may make mistakes from time to time, our focus will never waver. We are given the incredible opportunity and responsibility to have an eternal impact for good upon each student.
Continue to pray and partner with us in living up to Jesus’ call to impact students for eternity.
